Let cut JWs some slack on Christ's status. They might be right.
by Spectrum inthe alternative light i have received regarding early christianity has made me wonder whether jws have unwittingly got it right regarding the status of jesus.
a lot of strong criticism is made on this forum about jws sidelining of jesus in preference for jehovah the jewish god.
they have been equated with judaism because of their lack of inclusion of christ in their worship as well as their draconian code of expected conduct.

From what I have read, it isn't an exception to the rule, but an expectation to obey another rule, namely that one has to look after their own family - which the jws can narrow in their own mind to mean "matters of baseline money".
The shunning is a stuff up that requires mental gymnastics to appease some semblence of another rule - it's not an exemption per se

Scriptures You Won't Hear at the 04-06-06 Church Sermon.
by scout575 in"in their greed they will exploit you with fabrications, but from of old their condemnation has not been idle, and their destruction does not sleep.
" ( 2 peter 2:3 ).
"the present heavens and earth have been reserved by the same word for fire, kept for the day of judgment and of destruction of the godless.

Their destruction doesn't sleep - it goes on
- the wicked will not dwell in the land
- he will exalt you to possess the land; you will look on the destruction of the wicked
- the loss of soul is obvious
If you had not been to the land, it would seem unusual to you - macabre then

One Watchtower/Catholic comparison...
by Confession indon't know how many of you have read m. james penton's "apocalypse delayed: the story of jehovah's witnesses.
" honestly it's not what i'd call an "easy read," but it does contain very well researched information.
i enjoyed his recognition of a similarity between the wts and catholicism.

Irenaeus
- After the Holy Apostles (Peter and Paul) had founded and set the Church in order (in Rome) they gave over the exercise of the episcopal office to Linus.

A couple of differences - I don't think that the watchtower comes up with first and second century references

Mesopotamia, the tower of Babel, fact or fiction?
by wanderlustguy inof course the area known as mesopotamia was real, and it looks like there is evidence of a "tower of babel".
but as for the story of all languages, etc is it where everyone came from?.
when we look at society today, as cultures and people of different races merge together, we see people becoming more like each other, not more distinct.

Many groups have a certain view of the world - it's their "word" - their language - check jwism - they have their own words and ways of saying things, let alone a common doctrine.
And here we are - scattering it

JWs can quote you the bible back to front.
by Spectrum init was my mother that gave me the idea for this thread.
i said to her, "jws think that they are the only christians that study the bible and behave like they have a monopoly on its understanding.
she replied, "they are the only ones with a bible in their house, the only ones that bother to actually read the bible.

The problem is I couldn't think of any non-JW that has an understanding of the bible as a christian ought to. To a degree she was right.
Your mothers assertion is ridiculous, and it seems to have effected your judgement in this
Every child that went to my school owned one and were directed to read and study their bible, with homework included, from primary school age.
I am not unusual among my piers an having read many versions, cover to cover. People that I have been associated with have studied it in the most detailed and encompassing manners. There are an enormous number of religious in the catholic church (I imagine the number is vast) who not just own one but have knowledge of the text at university level - and I don't mean the Awake kind.
The assertion is ridiculous - they compare themselves with simple people of certain religions who they find at home on a Saturday morning - those who read the bible most likely don't entertain them - I know I don't.

Was Eve Perfect?
by Sunnygal41 inhello, need some thoughts on this one............this question was presented to me last night and i told the person i'd bring it to the forum and get some of our resident scholars to opine on it.
the reasoning goes that eve did not have full knowledge like adam did, so when she took the fruit, she did so in that context and so, was not perfect, as adam was.

I got this from that thread
Gen.1:24 describes animals as being living souls.
Gen.2:7 describes man as being created differently, in that God breathed spirit (Ruach) into man.Hence the body contains the soul, and the soul the spirit.
I understand that Rabbinical teaching has it that the soul consists of the mind, emotion and will, which animals also have to a greater or lesser degree, and which are usually engaged in that order, to progress thought through to action..When Adam sinned his spirit [died/was broken] and so he became mere flesh, an intelligent animal.
He is [reborn / resurrected / reconnected to the divine] when the spirit enters in.
At this point a battle ensues between flesh and spirit, and the spirit can be "quenched".To me, this made a little more sense of the Westminster Catechism's claim that Jesus (as spirit) took on a true body and a reasonable soul.
I think I see how you disagree, but alas, I diverge
I think I agree that the spirit dies through sin, but it remains for the soul to understand the spirit is not alive - for the knowledge by natural law - different laws provide for differing opinions of what sin is
For me, soul is essence, what makes you different - that you are what you are - like you say, what kind of animal you are
I think the body has the spirit and the soul, not in the soul (not all the time - how many husbands are in their wife the whole time), so if the spirit dies there is more than mere flesh - there is a widow Together they live in a house, the body, but one can live there - devoid of spirit, the widow - devoid of soul, the jw?

- to the serpent, "Because you have done this...... - to Adam he said, "Because you have - not so with Eve; there's no 'because you..'
- Eve is soul - and vulnerable, submitted to her spirit / husband - the two are one flesh (for you have had five husbands, and the one you live with now is not your husband)- but this time there was a different spirit talking (serpent)
- there is what appears as punishment, but it is relation to her 'marriage' and her husband
in pain you shall bring forth children (works), yet your desire shall be for your husband
yet as Paul says, if her husband dies she is free from that law
